Interview with multi-million selling, award-winning producer, Chris "Ruff Diamond" Robinson, owner of SupaEarth studio and records.
As well as his own underground dance music, Chris has produced and remixed artists as big as Beyoncé, Estelle and Mark Morrison, had music released on EMI, Universal, Capitol, Sony, Virgin etc. and had his music licensed to TV networks such as MTV, SKY, HBO, Universal, the BBC etc.
Yeah, I know.
In this interview, we explore his tips and techniques covering everything from:
1. Getting inspiration.
2. Capturing ideas.
3. His workflow in the studio.
4. The biggest struggles he’s faced (and overcome) in his career.
5. The biggest mistakes he sees new producers making.
6. Brilliant advice for producers at any level.
Here's a summary of some of Ruff's advice:
"You have to develop self-belief.
Don’t take criticisms to heart…use them to up your game.
Measure yourself against the very best in the game in your genre.
Ask “what is lacking in my record compared to theirs?”.
Learn from other producers.
Be aware of what’s happening in the scene, but develop your own sound. Don’t try and be like someone else.
Try adding live aspects into electronic tracks.
Make your own presets…organise your own library of sounds.
Learn just a few plugins inside-out, rather than following the latest trend.
If you use monitors (rather than headphones) invest in trying to get a level, flat sound in your room, and suitable monitors.
Idea come anywhere and at any time. Collect ideas in your phone….keep it close by.
Rarely gets idea from staring at a blank DAW project.
Important to have the right people around you.
Be consistent!
Learn the business, understand the industry and be the best that you can be."
